The Philippines experiences one of the strongest monsoon seasons all over the world. When worse comes to worst, strong rains and super typhoons hit the country and cause damage to our livelihood.
This setting is no news for Filipinos. As this happens annually, you should know the best maintenance for your home when flood happens. If you’re a first-time homeowner, here are home maintenance you should do before the rainy day hits.
Do an all-around roofing checkup
One of the most vulnerable parts of your home is the roof! When maintained poorly, they can easily develop holes that can cause water leaks. What’s more, they can easily corrode and cause water to seep into the walls and ceilings.
Before the rainy days or when flood occurs, make sure to do an all-around checkup of the roofing. This includes not only the roof itself but also the gutters and pipes. Ensure that the water from the roof can easily drain out of the home.
Clear out any containers
During the rainy season, water can easily collect in all kinds of containers. Stored rainwater can house mosquitoes and other harmful insects, making them the perfect breeding ground for illnesses like dengue, malaria, and more!
Clearing out any containers or just about anything that can store rainwater can do great wonders! If you use them temporarily to collect the water leaks at home, make sure to dispose of them when the rain stops.
Ready an emergency kit when flood occurs
The monsoon season in the Philippines is very unpredictable. Although most Pinoys are used to extreme weather, an emergency kit should ready you for the unexpected. Aside from the first aid supplies, you should also keep some medicines.
Most of all, your emergency kit should include basic supplies like potable drinking water, non-perishable food, extra clothes, a flashlight, whistle, among others. If you ever got stuck without rescue, you have survival essentials to last through the days.
Prepare for the annual flooding
Flooding isn’t new to Filipinos. Especially those living in low-lying areas or near bodies of water, houses can easily get submerged under layers of mud, dirt, and water. Before the rainy day starts, keep your most valued possessions in high places at home — be it on your second floor or the ceiling.

These are very important tips since there are a lot of flood-prone areas in the Philippines. And rainy days will be here in a few months.

Ah yes! We need to be truly vigilant and also, have an emergency kit on standby! The floods are so ruthless, one of these days!
My area, apparently, is a catch basin. So every time there's a heavy rain, there's always a heavy flood. Yes, we always have emergency kits especially during the typhoon season. Also, we improvised platforms so we can easily put our appliances in elevated area in case the flood enters the house
We have similar concerns here in Texas. Living near the Gulf Coast, we are low- lying and prone to flooding, almost year- round.
This is very timely especially during this raining season. These are very helpful tips nice!
These are great tips. I'll definitely keep this in mind. It's good to know skills especially this pandemic.
Preparing an emergency kis is the first thing I do. Thanks for these DIYS tips
